How did we come up with that name? Exit, Pursued by a Bear is perhaps the most famous, or infamous, stage direction ever written by William Shakespeare, for his play The Winter’s Tale, in Act III, as Antigonus meets his untimely demise at the hands of the aforementioned bear – you know, those big claws, sharp teeth and all.
Roanoke’s new downtown community theatre promises no live bears will be on the Community High School stage on Campbell Avenue – our home -we assure you. What we can promise – whether you call us Exit, Pursued By a Bear, the Bear Theatre or just Bear, as in hey, let’s go “see a play at The Bear tonight,” is another option for local theater patrons, for the pool of talented community actors (and would be actors) looking for more opportunities to audition, and for directors (including first-timers), stage managers, costumers, set designers etc. to find another home for their unique talents.
We do not view this as a competition with other local community theatres, but more as a complement to the great productions put on elsewhere, helping to fill a void in the heart of the Roanoke Valley, where several other venues have closed over the past 10 years or so. In addition to offering tried-and-true crowd pleasers, Bear Theatre will stage other licensed works that are often classics in their own right, and one new work every season. So, grab a meal or a craft beer downtown, then head over to Exit, Pursued by a Bear when our inaugural season launches this summer. Support all of the local community theatre options – and add The Bear to your list. Look for single-play ticket and season subscription information soon. Help us ROAR! as we begin our journey withCrimes of the Heart in August.
